ASTM D6751-08 details standards and specifications for biodiesels blended with middle distillate fuels. This specification standard specifies various test methods to be used in the determination of certain properties for biodiesel blends.
ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world. It sets technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM International standards have an important role in the information infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade internationally. ASTM International, originally known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), was formed over a century ago, when a group of engineers and scientists got together to address frequent rail breaks in the burgeoning railroad industry. Their work led to standardization on the steel used in rail construction, ultimately improving railroad safety for the nation. As the century progressed and new industrial, governmental and environmental developments created new standardization requirements, ASTM responded with consensus standards that have been widely adopted internationally.
The biodiesel industry’s standard for biodiesel fuel is known as ASTM D 6751. The ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) is a US organization that defines the principals for ASTM grade biodiesel fuel. This organization upholds a high standard within the industry and is comprised of fuel producers, engine equipment manufacturers, and third party interest groups (users, government agencies, and independent consultants) The ASTM’s rigorous standards make their ballot process rather complicated. In fact, a single negative vote is enough to defeat a ballot all together. It is ultimately a true consensus organization. Some of the ASTM standards can take 10 years or more to gain a consensus making the entire process quite time consuming. Click here to view current ASTM D6751 specifications
ASTM fuel standards are the minimum accepted values within the biodiesel industry in order to provide customer satisfaction and/or protection. Technical reviews are necessary to secure ASTM approved fuel and provide the engine community and customers with the necessary information they need to assure biodiesel blends are problem free.
