RENEWABLE DIESEL
Renewable Diesel is the next generation of renewable fuel. It has the same properties as petroleum fuel. According to California’s Air Resources Board (CARB), it has one of the lowest carbon intensities.
WHY RENEWABLE DIESEL?
- Same Fuel Characteristics as Petroleum: Renewable Diesel has the same chemical characteristics as petroleum diesel. You can ship it through the same pipelines and sell it at the same pumps as conventional diesel fuel.
- High Cetane Value: Renewable Diesel has a higher cetane value, similar to how octane value applies to gasoline.
- High Energy Density: Unlike cellulosic ethanol, which has much lower energy density than the fuel it replaces, Renewable Diesel matches the energy density of petroleum diesel. This results in higher performance and efficiency.
- Fuel Output Flexibility: Our technology produces Renewable Diesel that meets strict aviation fuel specifications, just like other hydrocarbon fuels such as diesel, gasoline, and heating oil. Renewable Diesel will deliver MPG comparable to conventional diesel.
- Feedstock Flexibility: Like biodiesel, Renewable Diesel can be made from any lipid-based feedstock. Common oils include low-value byproducts like soybean oil or waste products like used vegetable oil. Plants can use various feedstocks based on economics and availability.
- High Efficiency Operation: Renewable Diesel plants operate with up to 85% efficiency, using about half the energy of other conventional biofuel processes. These plants are highly energy-efficient.
- Low Capital Costs: Renewable Diesel plants cost about the same or even less than conventional biodiesel plants.
- Very Low GHG Emissions: Renewable Diesel produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than corn ethanol or soy biodiesel. When using waste grease, it emits even less than cellulosic ethanol.
- Environmental Benefits: Renewable Diesel is CO2 neutral.
What’s the Difference Between Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel?
Both fuels can be made from the same feedstocks. However, the process changes their chemical properties, making Renewable Diesel very similar to petroleum diesel.
