Decanter centrifuges (also called solid-bowl scroll centrifuges) are continuous, high-throughput solids-liquid separators that use high-speed rotation and a scroll conveyor to continuously separate solids from liquids. The rotating bowl generates centrifugal forces of 1,000–5,000 × g, pushing solids to the bowl wall while the scroll (conveyor) transports the solids cake toward the discharge end. Clear liquid overflows from the opposite end. Decanters excel in large-volume, continuous dewatering of sludges, slurries, and suspensions — widely used in wastewater treatment, oil & gas, mining, food & beverage, chemicals, and biotechnology.

System Design & Key Components

Decanter centrifuges consist of a horizontal, cylindrical-conical bowl rotating at high speed, with an inner scroll (conveyor) rotating at a slightly different speed. Key components include:

  • Solid bowl (cylindrical + conical beach)
  • Scroll conveyor with wear-resistant flights
  • Feed pipe / distributor
  • Solids discharge ports at conical end
  • Liquid overflow weirs at cylindrical end
  • Main drive motor + back drive (differential speed control)
  • PLC/VFD controls for speed, differential, pond depth
Materials are typically 316L/2205 duplex stainless steel or hardened alloys for abrasive slurries.

Decanter Centrifuge Process

The continuous separation process includes:

  1. Feed Introduction — Slurry enters through the center feed pipe into the rotating bowl.
  2. Separation Zone — Centrifugal force pushes solids to the bowl wall; liquid forms a clear pool closer to the center.
  3. Scroll Conveyance — The scroll rotates at a slightly slower/faster speed, conveying settled solids toward the conical discharge end.
  4. Beach Drying — Solids climb the conical beach, dewatering further before discharge through ports.
  5. Liquid Discharge — Clarified liquid overflows adjustable weirs at the cylindrical end.
  6. Continuous Operation — Feed, solids, and liquid discharge occur simultaneously; parameters (bowl speed, differential speed, pond depth) are adjusted via controls.
