High FFA Pretreatment & Esterification – SRS International

High FFA Pretreatment & Esterification

At SRS International, our high FFA pretreatment systems make your biodiesel plant multi-feedstock capable. You can use lower-cost, high-FFA feedstocks like animal fats, algae oil, or Jatropha. In today’s volatile feedstock market, flexibility is not just an advantage — it’s essential for profitability.

Why High FFA Pretreatment Matters

Refined oils are costly and increasingly scarce. By equipping your plant with feedstock pretreatment systems, you gain access to more affordable sources like beef tallow, poultry fats, and emerging options such as algae-based oils. These materials contain free fatty acid (FFA) levels too high for traditional base transesterification — but pretreatment solves this challenge efficiently.

How the Esterification Process Works

When feedstocks contain excess FFA, they must undergo acid esterification. The process begins with filtration to remove contaminants and moisture. Then:

  1. Methanol and sulfuric acid (the catalyst) are combined.
  2. The mixture is blended with filtered oil.
  3. Under controlled heat and agitation, FFAs are converted to biodiesel.
  4. The final step is dewatering before entering transesterification.

This increases biodiesel yield while ensuring fuel quality.

SRS Esterification Systems

SRS International offers two scalable esterification technologies:

  • Skid-mounted, continuous-flow
  • Custom-built to integrate with your existing biodiesel system
  • Zero yield loss during FFA conversion

Whether you’re upgrading a current plant or planning a turnkey facility, our high FFA pretreatment systems ensure you’re ready for feedstock variability.
