Vertical Coalescer Filtration

Vertical Coalescer Filtration System

Vertical Coalescer Filtration System

Vertical coalescer filtration systems are gravity-assisted separators that remove fine immiscible liquid droplets (primarily water from hydrocarbons or oil from water) or aerosols from gas streams. The vertical orientation maximizes gravitational drainage of coalesced droplets, making these systems highly effective for high-flow, continuous separation in oil & gas, petrochemical, fuel processing, and compressed gas applications. They achieve very low outlet contaminant levels (often <15 ppm water in fuel or <0.01 ppm oil in gas) and are widely used where space is limited and high efficiency is required.

System Design & Key Components

The system features a vertical cylindrical pressure vessel with inlet at the bottom or side, coalescing elements in the middle, and clean outlet at the top. Coalescing media (multi-layered glass fiber, synthetic fibers, or pleated cartridges) is housed in vertical cartridges or bundles. A sump at the bottom collects separated liquid, which is drained manually or automatically. Many designs include pre-filters (to remove solids) and post-separators (to prevent re-entrainment).

Vertical advantages: Excellent gravity drainage, compact footprint, high liquid hold-up capacity in sump, and natural flow path for rising gas or descending liquid phases.

Coalescence & Separation Process

The vertical flow and separation sequence includes:

  1. Inlet Distribution — Contaminated fluid enters at the bottom (liquid) or side (gas); flow is evenly distributed to avoid channeling.
  2. Pre-Filtration (optional) — Coarse solids are removed by upstream filter or inlet baffle to protect coalescer media.
  3. Coalescing Stage — Fluid passes through vertical coalescing elements; small droplets are captured and merged into larger ones.
  4. Gravity Drainage — Enlarged droplets settle downward by gravity into the bottom sump or collection zone.
  5. Phase Separation — Clean gas exits the top or clean liquid exits the top while separated phase drains from the bottom.
  6. Continuous or Automatic Drain — Interface level controller or timer opens drain valve to remove accumulated liquid without interrupting flow.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Coalescer Comparison

Feature Vertical Coalescer Horizontal Coalescer
Orientation & Flow Vertical vessel, upward gas / downward liquid flow Horizontal vessel, side-to-side flow
Gravity Drainage Excellent (natural downward path) Good, but requires longer settling zone
Footprint Compact (smaller floor space) Larger footprint
Capacity & Hold-up High liquid hold-up in sump Lower hold-up volume
Best For High liquid load, space-constrained sites Very high flow rates, long settling time needed

Typical Operating Parameters

Parameter Typical Range Notes
Droplet Removal Size 0.1–5 μm (high-efficiency) Down to 0.01 μm in advanced media
Operating Pressure 1–100 bar (gas), up to 50 bar (liquid) Application-dependent
Flow Velocity Through Media 0.05–0.3 m/s (gas), lower for liquid Low velocity prevents re-entrainment
Pressure Drop (Clean) 0.05–0.3 bar Increases slowly with loading
Outlet Contaminant Level <15 ppm water in fuel, <0.01 ppm oil in gas With proper sizing and media
Media Life 1–5 years Depends on contaminant load and maintenance

Common Applications & Advantages

Industry / Application Typical Fluid Primary Goal
Oil & Gas Production Produced water, crude oil emulsions Dehydration, water removal to <15 ppm
Fuel & Refining Diesel, jet fuel, gasoline Remove emulsified water, meet quality specs
Natural Gas Processing Wet gas streams Remove liquid aerosols, protect compressors
Compressed Gas / Air Instrument air, process gas Ultra-clean dry gas output
Petrochemical Amine, glycol, hydrocarbon streams Prevent foaming, protect downstream units

Key Advantages of Vertical Coalescer Systems

  • Superior gravity-assisted drainage for efficient droplet removal
  • Compact footprint — ideal for offshore platforms and space-limited sites
  • High liquid hold-up capacity in sump for handling slugs or surges
  • Very low outlet contamination levels (sub-ppm possible)
  • Continuous operation with automatic interface control
  • Long media life and low maintenance when properly sized
