Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable alternative fuel made from domestic resources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled cooking oil. It contains no petroleum but can be blended with conventional diesel at any ratio. Biodiesel can be used in standard diesel engines with little or no modifications.
The story of biodiesel begins in 1900 when Rudolf Diesel unveiled his revolutionary engine at the World’s Exhibition in Paris. Running on peanut oil, it was the world’s first biodiesel engine. Vegetable oils and animal fats powered early diesel engines until the 1920s, when modifications allowed the use of petroleum-based diesel.
Although Rudolf Diesel originally designed his engine for vegetable oils, cheap fossil fuels pushed biodiesel aside for decades. Interest in biodiesel resurfaced during fuel shortages in the 1970s and has grown steadily with rising fuel prices and environmental awareness.
