Bowl centrifuges (also known as basket centrifuges) are batch-operated, high-speed separators that use centrifugal force to separate solids from liquids, producing a very dry cake and clear filtrate. The perforated or solid bowl rotates at high RPM (typically 1,000–3,000), generating forces of 500–2,000 × g or more. Solids are thrown to the bowl wall, liquid passes through perforations (if perforated) or overflows, and the cake is discharged manually or automatically. Bowl centrifuges excel in applications requiring high solids dryness, gentle handling of delicate products, or recovery of valuable solids — common in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food & beverage, biotechnology, and fine chemicals.

System Design & Key Components

Bowl centrifuges consist of a rotating perforated or solid bowl (basket) driven by an electric motor, mounted in a sturdy casing. Key components include:

  • Perforated bowl (with filter cloth or screen) or solid bowl
  • Feed pipe or distributor for slurry introduction
  • Solids discharge mechanism (manual plow/scraper, automatic peeler knife, or pneumatic plow)
  • Filtrate outlet (for perforated bowls)
  • VFD for speed control and safety interlocks
Materials are typically 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy, or titanium for corrosive slurries, with sanitary designs available for pharma/food.

Main variants: Vertical basket (top or bottom discharge), horizontal basket (peeler), and inverting filter centrifuges (cloth inverts for complete discharge).

Centrifugation Cycle

The typical batch cycle for a perforated bowl centrifuge includes:

  1. Feed / Loading — Slurry is pumped into the rotating bowl; centrifugal force pushes solids to the wall while liquid begins to pass through perforations (or overflows in solid bowls).
  2. Cake Formation — Solids build a uniform cake layer; filtrate is continuously discharged.
  3. Wash (optional) — Wash liquid is sprayed onto the cake to displace mother liquor or remove impurities.
  4. Dry Spin — Bowl spins at high speed to remove residual moisture (residual moisture often 10–30%).
  5. Discharge — Bowl slows or stops; solids are scraped/peeled off the wall and discharged via chute, plow, or automatic peeler knife.
  6. Clean/Reset — Bowl is cleaned (CIP if sanitary), then the cycle repeats.
